On Saturday, Rwanda's Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva visited the Rulindo district, where he urged residents to protect the achievements made in the agriculture sector. The visit was part of the launch of the 2027A agricultural season, which was also attended by 3,000 people. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of protecting the progress made in the sector, especially with the upcoming rainy season approaching.

The visit took place at the Nyarububa marshland, located in the Rukozo and Cyungo sectors, which is one of the areas where the government has invested in agricultural development. The marshland, which covers an area of 97.27 hectares, is home to 1,302 farmers who are part of the KOYAKIRU cooperative. According to the Prime Minister, 96.97 hectares, or 99.6%, of the land has already been planted with various crops.

The farmers in the Nyarububa marshland have reported an increase in crop yields since the implementation of the RSSP II project in 2008. Gonzague Irakarama, one of the farmers, said that previously, they would harvest 2.5 tons of maize per hectare, but now they have increased their yield to 6.5 tons per hectare. The farmers are optimistic that they will continue to improve their yields with the right support.

However, the farmers also highlighted some challenges they are facing, including the lack of access to water due to damaged irrigation infrastructure. Patrick Iradukunda, a farmer, said that they are concerned about the delayed rains, but they are hopeful that they will receive sufficient rainfall soon. The farmers are requesting support to repair the damaged infrastructure.

The Rulindo district mayor, Judith Mukanyirigira, said that the government is working to address the challenges faced by the farmers. She mentioned that the government is constructing new water reservoirs to support the farmers during the dry season. The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of protecting the investments made in the agriculture sector.

Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva urged the residents to take ownership of the achievements made in the agriculture sector and to protect the investments made. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate the neglect of infrastructure and that the farmers must take responsibility for maintaining it. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of increasing crop yields to achieve food security.

The launch of the 2027A agricultural season in Rulindo is part of the government's efforts to increase food production and reduce poverty. The Nyarububa marshland is one of the areas designated as a Food Basket Area (FOBASI), with the goal of increasing crop yields per hectare. The area has been planted with various crops, including maize, beans, and vegetables.
