The Rwandan government has announced that October will be a month of activities aimed at promoting national unity and fighting genocide ideology. The Ministry of Unity and National Guidance, MINUBUMWE, revealed that the theme for this year's activities is "Unity and Fighting Genocide: Our Choices." The ministry emphasized that all Rwandans should reflect on the choices they make to promote unity, which has been a cornerstone of the country's progress.

According to MINUBUMWE, various activities will be organized throughout the country from October 1 to 31. These activities will include discussions on unity and genocide ideology at the district level, as well as campaigns in communities to raise awareness about the importance of unity and the dangers of genocide ideology. Additionally, discussions will be held in schools, cooperatives, and other institutions to promote unity and fight genocide ideology.

A recent survey conducted by MINUBUMWE in 2025 found that the level of unity among Rwandans has reached 95.3%, up from 82.3% in 2010. The survey also revealed that the Eastern Province has the highest level of unity at 97.2%, followed by the Northern Province at 95.5% and the Southern Province at 95.4%. The Western Province has a unity level of 94.9%, while the City of Kigali has a level of 93.7%.

However, the survey also identified some challenges that need to be addressed to promote unity and fight genocide ideology. These challenges include the persistence of genocide ideology, which was cited by 23% of respondents as a problem in their communities. Furthermore, 38% of respondents reported that there are people who have committed genocide crimes and are still promoting ethnic divisions and discrimination.

The government has also expressed concern about the role of social media platforms based outside Rwanda in spreading misinformation and distorting history. According to MINUBUMWE, these platforms are confusing many people, especially young people, and undermining the country's progress.

To address these challenges, the government will conduct awareness campaigns and provide education on unity and genocide ideology. The campaigns will target specific groups, including youth in schools and universities, workers, and community leaders. The goal is to promote a culture of unity and fight genocide ideology, which is seen as a major obstacle to Rwanda's development.

The government has called on all Rwandans to participate in the activities planned for October and to reflect on their role in promoting unity and fighting genocide ideology. By working together, the government hopes to build a more united and prosperous society.
