The Rwanda Football Association, FERWAFA, has announced plans to conduct more training sessions on the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for coaches. This follows a two-day training session held on October 29-30, 2026, at the FERWAFA Hotel in Remera. The initial training session was attended by 70 participants and was led by four experts, including Claudio Altieri, Serge Mwambali, Theo Le Floch, and Andrew Howit.

The training session aimed to equip coaches with the knowledge and skills to effectively use GPS technology to monitor and improve player performance. The experts shared their knowledge on the benefits of using GPS in football, its application, and how to interpret data. The training session was officially closed by FERWAFA's interim President, Me. Gasarabwe Claudine, who was accompanied by Stephen Constantine, the coach of the national team.

According to Claudio Altieri, who led the training session, more training sessions will be conducted in the coming year to ensure that coaches from different clubs in Rwanda are equipped with the necessary skills to use GPS technology. This, he said, will help improve player performance and enhance the overall competitiveness of Rwandan football.

Stephen Constantine expressed his satisfaction with the participation and engagement of the coaches during the training session. He noted that the use of GPS technology will enable coaches to make informed decisions about player selection and team strategy. Constantine also expressed his confidence that the knowledge gained by the coaches will be applied in the national teams.

The GPS technology, which is already being used by various teams around the world, allows coaches to track player performance, monitor their physical condition, and make data-driven decisions. The technology, which is provided by StatSports, provides real-time data on player movement, speed, and distance covered during training and matches.

FERWAFA's initiative to introduce GPS technology in Rwandan football is part of its efforts to modernize and improve the sport in the country. The association has been working with various stakeholders to enhance the development of football in Rwanda, including providing training and capacity-building programs for coaches and players.

The use of GPS technology is expected to revolutionize football in Rwanda by providing coaches with valuable insights into player performance and enabling them to make informed decisions. With more training sessions planned, FERWAFA is confident that Rwandan coaches will be equipped with the necessary skills to compete at the highest level.
