The construction and expansion of the Prince House-Masaka road in Rwanda has reached a significant milestone, with preparatory work nearing completion. The project, undertaken by Chinese company Hunan Road and Bridge Construction Group Company, is expected to greatly improve transportation and facilitate economic growth in the region. The road expansion project began in November 2025 and is anticipated to be completed within 30 months.

The project involves the expansion of the 10.3-kilometer road from two to four lanes, with an additional 1.3 kilometers of elevated road. The project is a joint venture between Rwanda and China, with China providing approximately $22 million (Rwf 95 billion) and Rwanda contributing around $7.6 million (Rwf 35 billion). Once completed, the road is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve the overall transportation experience.

The preparatory work for the project is approximately 100% complete, with the main construction work set to begin soon. The road expansion project includes the construction of an elevated road section, which will be built to reduce traffic congestion and improve the flow of traffic. The project is expected to create over 132 jobs, with many residents already employed on the project.

Local business owners are optimistic about the impact of the project on their businesses. Many have reported an increase in customers, with some expecting a significant boost in sales once the road is completed. "We are expecting a significant increase in customers once the road is completed," said Desire Ngabo, owner of Come Again bar. "We plan to expand our services and build additional facilities to cater to the increased traffic."

The expansion of the Prince House-Masaka road is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy. The project is anticipated to increase access to the region, making it easier for people to travel and conduct business. "The expansion of the road will have a significant impact on our business," said Rebecca Iragena, owner of a local restaurant. "We have already seen an increase in customers, and we expect this to continue once the road is completed."

The Rwanda Transport Development Authority (RTDA) has confirmed that over 132 people have been employed on the project, with many more expected to be hired as the project progresses. The authority has also confirmed that the project is on schedule, with over 95% of the land acquisition and relocation work completed.

Once completed, the Prince House-Masaka road expansion project is expected to greatly improve transportation in the region, reducing congestion and improving the overall flow of traffic. The project is a significant investment in Rwanda's infrastructure and is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy.
