Kenya's President William Ruto has publicly criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of being untrustworthy. Speaking in Uasin Gishu County, Ruto claimed that Kenyatta had betrayed him by supporting Raila Odinga in the 2022 general elections. Ruto had previously supported Kenyatta in the 2013 and 2017 elections, with an agreement that Kenyatta would serve for two terms and then Ruto would take over for another two terms.
Ruto made the comments during a visit to Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties, where he launched and inspected development projects. He urged his supporters to give him one million more votes in the 2027 elections. Ruto also introduced a new slogan for his party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), using the phrases "Usawa ni Sawa" and "Kazi ni Kazi". The visit was seen as an attempt by Ruto to strengthen his influence in the region.
Kenyatta and Ruto served together as president and deputy president from 2013 to 2022, but their relationship deteriorated when Kenyatta supported Odinga in the 2022 elections. Ruto described Kenyatta as an ingrate, saying he had been deceived by his former ally. Ruto's comments have sparked a reaction from Kenyatta's supporters, who have defended the former president.
During the visit, Ruto defended his government's record, saying it had fulfilled its promises in various sectors and was ready for the 2027 elections. He accused his opponents of lacking a manifesto and a clear plan. Ruto also praised the partnership between his government and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying it would continue even after the 2027 elections.
The visit also highlighted the differences between Ruto and other leaders in the region, as the 2027 elections approach. Some leaders, including Senator Jackson Mandago, urged politicians to avoid using Ruto's visit for personal attacks or to settle scores. Others, including Governor Jonathan Bii, called for unity and respect for Ruto's office.
Ruto's visit included the launch of several development projects, including infrastructure, electricity, and education initiatives. In Nandi County, he announced a Sh20 billion investment to build 350 kilometers of roads. In Nandi, tea farmers received a bonus of Sh12.50 per kilogram of tea. Ruto urged farmers to choose capable leaders to manage tea factories and ensure better returns.
The visit will culminate in the Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, which will be co-hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. The celebrations will include sports competitions, including athletics, volleyball, and soccer. Ruto's government has provided Sh850 million to support small-scale tea farmers in the region.
