Zanzibar is experiencing a significant influx of Russian tourists, thanks to direct flights from Moscow that have made the islands more accessible and affordable for visitors. The impact is particularly noticeable in areas such as Nungwi and Kendwa, where Russian is increasingly being spoken among tourists and locals. This new wave of visitors is creating fresh opportunities for businesses and workers across the islands.
The growth in Russian tourism has been welcomed by local businesses, with many entrepreneurs benefiting from the growing market. Nurdin Waziri Rashid, Human Resources Manager and chef, attributed the increase in visitors to the direct flights from Moscow, saying it has made travel more affordable for Russian tourists. He thanked the Tanzanian and Russian governments for working together to bring more visitors to the islands.
The influx of Russian tourists has also created opportunities for young people to learn new skills, including the Russian language. Hotel worker Omar Hatib Ali learned Russian over the past year through interacting with tourists and said the growing arrivals have given young people a chance to develop new skills and communicate with visitors. He thanked President Samia and President Mwinyi for giving them these opportunities.
Small businesses, including souvenir sellers and artists, are also benefiting from the growing market. Joseph Nasari, a souvenir seller, described Russian tourists as valuable customers whose spending reaches local communities. He noted that during Covid-19, Russian tourists helped support local businesses and made them look at tourism differently.
Women entrepreneurs have also welcomed the increase in visitors, with traders and tailors saying tourism is creating opportunities for them to earn an income through their businesses and creative work. Artist Samuel Steven from Nungwi said the increase in Russian visitors has helped expand the market for local artwork, enabling him to earn enough to support his family.
Russian tourists have praised Zanzibar for its hospitality, safety, and improving infrastructure, with some comparing the islands to the Maldives. Tourist Zhidkova Inna from St Petersburg said it was her first visit to Tanzania and that she had been impressed by the warmth of the people. She also highlighted the importance of direct flights from Moscow in making her trip possible.
Local residents and tour guides are calling for additional flights to accommodate growing demand. Tour guide Rajab Abdul Makila said they are happy and enjoying the presence of Russian tourists, but are asking the government to add another flight to cater to the increasing number of visitors. Kendwa resident Bendu Joaki said the arrival of Russian tourists has transformed the area, with Russians praising Zanzibar for its beauty and hospitality.
