Russia has launched a series of massive nighttime bombardments on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leaving five regions without power. The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy reported that the attacks, which occurred on the night of November 6-7, damaged numerous energy installations, causing significant disruptions to electricity supplies in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kiev, Jytomyr, and Kharkiv. The ministry stated that the attacks caused significant damage to transportation and distribution networks.
The attacks, which involved 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones, caused widespread disruptions to Ukraine's energy sector. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, at least nine people were injured, including one child, in the attacks that targeted a dozen regions across the country. The Ukrainian president stated that the bombardments were a precursor to a trilateral meeting scheduled for November 10-11 in Abu Dhabi, where emissaries from Kiev, Washington, and Moscow will attempt to revive stalled negotiations.
The situation in Kiev is particularly dire, with the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, announcing that the Russian attacks damaged a major road bridge and energy infrastructure, disrupting supplies to the capital. The bridge, which spans the Dnieper River, was previously targeted in October, prompting authorities to install anti-drone nets to protect it. Klitschko warned that the energy supply situation in Kiev is extremely challenging, affecting the city's heating and water systems.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy reported that energy workers are working at full capacity to restore power, but their efforts are being hindered by constant air alerts. The ministry stated that the attacks caused significant damage to many energy installations in the Kiev region, severely impeding the delivery of electricity to the capital and its surrounding areas.
President Zelensky called for increased bilateral support from the United States, urging the US Congress to pay closer attention to Ukraine's situation. He stated that Russia is continually escalating its attacks and that Ukraine needs more support to counter the aggression. The Ukrainian president's comments come as the country braces for a potentially difficult winter due to the ongoing bombardments.
The recent Russian attacks have caused significant damage to Ukraine's energy sector and infrastructure, particularly in the capital. The Ukrainian government is working to repair the damage and restore power to affected areas, but the situation remains challenging. The country's energy infrastructure has been a key target of Russian attacks, with Moscow seeking to disrupt Ukraine's ability to generate and distribute power.
The international community is watching the situation closely, with the trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi seen as a crucial opportunity to revive stalled negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States. The meeting will aim to find a solution to the ongoing conflict, which has been ongoing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The outcome of the talks remains uncertain, but Ukraine is seeking increased support from its international partners to counter Russian aggression.
