The Rotary Club of Abuja, The Ambassadors, recently implemented a four-in-one community intervention in Orozo, Abuja, aimed at improving maternal and child health and promoting community development. The intervention, which covered Orozo 1 and Orozo 2 communities, included the distribution of maternal and delivery kits to pregnant women at the Primary Healthcare Centre, Orozo. This initiative was designed to address some of the immediate material challenges faced by vulnerable pregnant women as they prepare for childbirth.

The programme also featured health education, basic education and literacy promotion, and economic empowerment initiatives. The club’s focus on education reflects its commitment to using education as a tool for improving livelihoods and strengthening community resilience. By incorporating basic education and literacy into the intervention, the club aimed to have a broader impact on the community, extending beyond healthcare.

During the programme, Prince Heberts Ezechinyere, President of the Rotary Club of Abuja, The Ambassadors, urged expectant mothers to prioritise regular antenatal and postnatal care and promptly seek medical attention whenever they notice health concerns. He encouraged the women to keep their antenatal appointments, follow medical advice, and prepare adequately for childbirth, stressing the importance of continued healthcare after delivery.

Ezechinyere emphasised that maternal healthcare should not end with childbirth, but should extend through the postnatal period to safeguard the health and wellbeing of both mothers and their babies. The club also encouraged residents to make greater use of available healthcare services, while highlighting financial and other barriers that could prevent vulnerable women from accessing essential maternal healthcare.

The intervention included the induction of new members into the Rotary service network, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to volunteerism and its “Service Above Self” philosophy. The programme provided an opportunity for the club to interact directly with healthcare workers, expectant mothers, community leaders, and other residents, while identifying additional needs at the Primary Healthcare Centre for possible future intervention.

The engagement allowed the club to assess the community's needs and identify potential areas for future support. By working closely with local stakeholders, the Rotary Club of Abuja, The Ambassadors, demonstrated its commitment to community development and improving the lives of vulnerable populations. The club’s efforts aim to have a lasting impact on the community, extending beyond the immediate intervention.

The distribution of maternal and delivery kits and the provision of health education and economic empowerment initiatives are part of the club’s efforts to support vulnerable pregnant women in Orozo.
