The Rotaract Club of Tema Meridian has successfully conducted a comprehensive health screening exercise for residents of Peki in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region. The exercise, which was organized in collaboration with the Ho Teaching Hospital, provided crucial medical services, including general health screenings, medical consultations, eye and dental examinations, rapid testing, and professional counselling. This initiative aimed to address the healthcare needs of the community.
The health screening exercise offered a range of medical services to participants, including immediate medical attention, medication distribution, and prescription eyeglasses for individuals with eye conditions. The Ghana AIDS Commission partnered with the project to deliver vital health education and distributed condoms to promote safe sex and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This comprehensive approach ensured that participants received holistic care.
Mr. Elikem Asem, President of the Rotaract Club of Tema Meridian, emphasized the importance of the exercise in ensuring a healthy and productive population. He noted that financial constraints often prevented residents from seeking medical care at the Ho Teaching Hospital, and therefore, the exercise aimed to bridge this gap by bringing medical experts directly to the people. The club provided free screenings and medications to meet the immediate healthcare needs of the community.
The President of the Rotaract Club of Tema Meridian expressed concern over the high rate of teenage pregnancy in the district, which is ranked second-highest in the region. He called on community and opinion leaders to establish mechanisms to protect young girls from early sexual activity and urged leaders to engage youth on the dangers of drug abuse. Mr. Asem emphasized the need for strict measures to curb drug abuse and mitigate lifestyle diseases.
The Rotaract Club of Tema Meridian received support from Sonrise Senior High School during the exercise and from the Ghana Blind Union, which donated prescription eyeglasses to individuals with eye conditions. Mr. Asem appealed to corporate bodies to undertake similar exercises to address the health needs of citizens, enabling them to contribute to regional and national development.
Beneficiaries of the health screening exercise expressed gratitude to the Rotaract Club of Tema Meridian for prioritizing their health needs and bringing medical experts to their doorstep. They commended the health professionals from the Ho Teaching Hospital for their exceptional service and appealed to the Club to consider making the health screening a quarterly event.
The health screening exercise was a significant initiative that demonstrated the commitment of the Rotaract Club of Tema Meridian to improving the health and well-being of the Peki community. The club's efforts to address the healthcare needs of the community were appreciated by the beneficiaries, and the exercise served as a model for future community health initiatives.
