Pedestrian distraction while crossing the road is also a significant factor, contributing to 258 accidents, or 7.62% of the total.
Excessive speed remains the primary cause of fatal accidents, resulting in 360 deaths, or 36.73% of all victims, and 1,021 injuries (23.25%). Driver distractions are the second leading cause of fatalities, with 177 deaths and 1,128 injuries, while pedestrian inattention resulted in 65 deaths and 227 injuries. The ONSR emphasizes the need for increased awareness and measures to address these issues.
Regionally, the governorate of Tunis recorded the highest number of accidents, with 403 incidents resulting in 76 deaths and 496 injuries. The governorate of Mahdia follows closely, with 284 accidents, 47 deaths, and 349 injuries. In contrast, the governorate of Kébili reported the lowest number of accidents, with 43 incidents, 13 deaths, and 65 injuries.
The ONSR's statistics highlight the need for targeted interventions to address the root causes of accidents.
