According to the Algerian National Delegation for Road Safety, 18,297 road accidents were recorded in Algeria between January and August 2026, representing a decrease of 89 accidents compared to the same period in 2025. The number of deaths and injuries also decreased, with 71 fewer deaths and 511 fewer injuries. Despite this positive trend, road accidents remain a major concern in Algeria, particularly among young people and motorcyclists.
Young people aged 18-29 are disproportionately represented in road accident statistics, accounting for 33.49% of all accidents recorded during the period. This age group was involved in 7,965 accidents, resulting in 1,044 deaths and 14,035 injuries. These numbers highlight the need for targeted prevention and awareness campaigns to address the specific risks faced by young road users.
Motorcyclists are also overrepresented in road accident statistics, accounting for 27.55% of all accidents despite making up only 6.55% of the national vehicle fleet. A total of 6,552 accidents involved motorcyclists, who are more vulnerable to injury or death due to the lack of protection offered by their vehicles.
The main causes of road accidents in Algeria are human-related, with reckless behavior and lack of vigilance accounting for 12.62% of cases, followed by speeding at 11.99%. Pedestrian distraction was a factor in 7.23% of accidents. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing driver behavior and promoting a culture of road safety.
The Algerian authorities have launched a national information and awareness campaign to promote the new Road Code and reinforce road safety culture among all users. The campaign aims to educate road users about the new regulations and encourage responsible behavior on the roads.
While the recent trends in road accident statistics are encouraging, the persistence of risk-taking behavior among road users means that the decline in accidents cannot be taken for granted. Road safety remains a societal issue that requires the mobilization of all users, as well as continued prevention and awareness efforts.
The authorities and other stakeholders must work together to address the specific challenges faced by young people and motorcyclists, who are most affected by road accidents. By promoting road safety awareness and education, and enforcing regulations, Algeria can continue to make progress in reducing the number of road accidents and saving lives.
