Rio Tinto SimFer recently hosted over a dozen Guinean journalists for a three-day initiative to provide insight into the Simandou project. The program, which took place from October 27 to 29, aimed to strengthen the journalists' understanding of the mining sector and the project's components. The event began with an information workshop in Conakry, followed by a site visit to the Beyla mining installations. The project, located in southeastern Guinea, involves the development of a major iron ore mine.
The Simandou project is a significant undertaking that spans approximately 110 kilometers and features substantial high-grade iron ore reserves. The project consists of three main components: mining, rail, and port infrastructure. The mining aspect is being developed by SimFer, a joint venture between the Guinean government, Rio Tinto, and Chalco Iron Ore Holdings (CIOH). During the workshop, journalists were introduced to the project's architecture and had the opportunity to engage with technical and operational leaders.
At the Beyla site, journalists were given a comprehensive tour of Rio Tinto SimFer's training and safety facilities. The visit included a session at the SABATY training center, which has a weekly training capacity of 500 to 700 employees. The center features simulation rooms and equipment, allowing workers to familiarize themselves with mining machinery in a controlled environment. Journalists also visited the risk demonstration center, where new employees are educated on potential hazards and prevention measures.
The journalists' tour continued at the ROM Pad, the area where ore is received and processed for crushing. This stage provided visitors with a deeper understanding of the ore's journey from arrival to treatment and transportation to storage and evacuation infrastructure. The site visit offered a concrete overview of the mining operation's organization and the interconnection between different stages of the production chain.
SimFer's social commitments were also a key topic of discussion during the visit. Company representatives outlined measures in place to support local communities, including dialogue mechanisms, social impact mitigation, and assistance for affected households. The company has invested over $34 billion in community development initiatives between 2023 and 2026, focusing on healthcare, education, agriculture, and economic diversification.
On the second day of the visit, journalists had the opportunity to take a helicopter tour of the Simandou massif and the project's infrastructure. From the air, they were able to observe the mining blocks, extraction areas, crushing center, conveyor systems, and storage zones. This aerial perspective provided a unique view of the project's scope and scale.
The initiative concluded with a better understanding of the Simandou project's complexities and Rio Tinto SimFer's efforts to engage with local communities and prioritize environmental preservation. Key aspects of the project include its massive scale, significant investment in local communities, and comprehensive approach to safety and environmental management.
