The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has launched an intervention program in Rivers State aimed at enhancing education and menstrual health for secondary school students. On Monday, at Government House in Port Harcourt, the initiative distributed learning iPads and cash support to students. This program is driven by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the President, and is focused on expanding access to digital learning and addressing menstrual health challenges.
The learning devices, provided by the NDDC, are preloaded with educational applications designed to make learning more interactive and engaging for junior secondary school students. Senator Tinubu emphasized that the iPads should be used strictly for educational purposes and not for sale. She directed the benefiting schools to provide evidence of distribution and ensure the learning aids reach the intended students. The event was represented by Lady Valerie Siminalayi Fubara, the wife of the Rivers State Governor.
The distribution of over 10,000 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across the state aims to promote menstrual health and prevent girls from being held back in their education due to menstrual challenges. Senator Tinubu directed that priority be given to students in rural communities and that the pads be distributed to government schools, including mixed schools. The initiative is part of a broader effort to empower school girls through menstrual health.
Beneficiaries and stakeholders have expressed appreciation for the initiative. Mrs. Gladys Ogudechika from Community Secondary School, Oyigbo, and Boyle Dedeboma from Community Secondary School, Akinima, commended the program for enhancing learning skills and providing valuable support to teachers and students. The intervention is expected to have a positive impact on the educational development of Rivers State students.
The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. Mina Ikuru, described the initiative as timely, noting that it would help address the stigma and misconceptions surrounding menstrual health among young girls. She urged students facing menstrual health challenges to speak openly with trusted individuals and encouraged beneficiaries to become mentors and ambassadors of the Renewed Hope Initiative.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, assured that the sanitary pads would be distributed according to the directives, including to schools in rural areas. Beneficiaries, including Miss Chika Wilson Marvellous and Miss Okodu Godstime Mirabel, thanked the Renewed Hope Initiative for the intervention and pledged to use the sanitary pads effectively.
The program is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative's efforts to support education and health in Rivers State. By providing learning iPads, cash support, and sanitary pads, the initiative aims to improve educational outcomes and promote menstrual health among secondary school students. The collaboration between RHI and NDDC reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by students in the region.
