A former police officer and another individual were arrested on Heritage Day in South Africa for allegedly stealing and selling municipal paving bricks. The two suspects, aged 23 and 54, were apprehended by the Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department's community liaison unit after an investigation into the illegal removal and sale of the bricks. The stolen bricks were sold to residents at R1.50 each.
The investigation began after two community members reported a man removing paving bricks from Datsun Park. Authorities found that more than 10 Eden Park properties had municipal paving bricks allegedly removed from public infrastructure. Residents who had bought the bricks were informed they came from a second-hand building material warehouse or dumping site. Some had already used the bricks to pave their properties.
Residents who had purchased the stolen bricks agreed to co-operate with authorities and voluntarily returned them. The bricks were removed from the properties and handed over to the authorities. The Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department spokesperson, Kelebogile Thepa, said the residents' co-operation was crucial in exposing the alleged theft.
The investigation led officers to the second suspect, a former police officer, who was allegedly found in possession of municipal paving bricks. Thepa said the two suspects face charges of tampering with essential infrastructure, possession of suspected stolen property, and theft of municipal property. They were detained at Eden Park police station and are expected to appear in the magistrate’s court.
The Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department commended the residents who assisted in exposing the alleged theft. The department urged communities to report the theft, vandalism, or illegal sale of municipal infrastructure. Community co-operation is essential in protecting public assets and ensuring municipal infrastructure remains available to residents.
The stolen bricks were used for paving at various homes in Eden Park. Residents had already completed the paving work before being asked to return the bricks. The authorities' swift action prevented further loss of municipal property.
