The Republic of Congo's Minister of Industrial Development, Special Economic Zones, and Private Sector Promotion, Michel Djombo, announced on November 3 in Brazzaville that a study on energy supply for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) aims to develop solutions to strengthen electrification in these zones and industrial enterprises. The goal is to achieve an estimated 805 MW of energy capacity for efficient operations. Djombo emphasized that energy is crucial for industrial production and that many industries face difficulties due to energy shortages.
The study, conducted with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is part of the third component of the Congo's Rural Electrification Programme, implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Hydraulics. Djombo highlighted that several investors interested in projects within SEZs face challenges due to energy constraints, stressing that energy is indispensable for accelerating the country's industrialization.
The Minister noted that the study will assess the needs required to supply energy to SEZs and support industries such as forestry companies operating in areas where SEZs are located. This initiative aims to address the energy challenges faced by industries, enabling them to operate efficiently. Djombo also emphasized the importance of this study in creating an enabling environment for investors.
UNDP Representative in Congo, Adama-Dian Barry, expressed her organization's commitment to supporting the government in securing funds for the study's implementation. She emphasized the need for quality deliverables to facilitate the government's efforts to mobilize financing for the project's operationalization. Barry also hoped that the study would lead to concrete prospects for transforming the industrial sector.
The study aligns with the National Development Plan 2027-2031, which prioritizes the industrial sector. The plan is expected to be implemented soon, and the study's findings will contribute to its successful execution. The government aims to create favorable conditions for investors and accelerate industrialization through this initiative.
The Republic of Congo's efforts to enhance electrification in SEZs are expected to boost industrial production and attract investments. The study's recommendations will inform strategies for addressing energy challenges and creating a conducive business environment. This initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to promoting economic growth and development.
The study's outcome will be crucial in determining the future of industrial development in the Republic of Congo. With the support of UNDP and other partners, the government aims to overcome energy challenges and create opportunities for economic growth. The successful implementation of this project will have a positive impact on the country's industrial sector and economy.
