The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to take immediate action to address the devastating flooding and erosion in Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State. This decision was made after a motion of urgent public importance was presented by Daniel Amos on behalf of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, who represents the constituency. The motion highlighted the severe ecological crisis affecting several communities in the area.
Torrential rainfall has triggered severe flooding and erosion in communities such as Ugwueke, Amaokai, Amaeze, Ezeukwu, Ndi Uzor, and Akunu. The disaster has had a significant impact, submerging homes, including the palaces of traditional rulers, and destroying farmlands, roads, and other critical infrastructure. Many residents have been displaced due to the destruction caused by the flooding and erosion.
The situation is further complicated by the loss of life, with two persons confirmed dead in Ndi Uzor as a result of the environmental crisis. In response to this tragedy, the House of Representatives commiserated with the families of the deceased and observed a minute of silence in their honour. This gesture underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for urgent intervention.
The House has called on several key agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South East Development Commission (SEDC), and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to provide immediate relief materials, emergency shelter, potable water, food, and medical supplies to the affected communities. This relief effort aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the disaster.
In addition to providing relief materials, the House has also urged the Ecological Fund Office, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the erosion. This assessment will inform urgent flood and erosion-control measures to prevent future occurrences. The goal is to mitigate the impact of such disasters in the future.
The Ministries of Agriculture and Food Security, and Works, as well as the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), have been tasked with assessing the damage to farmlands and roads. They are expected to provide appropriate recovery and rehabilitation support to affected communities. This multi-agency approach aims to ensure a coordinated response to the crisis.
The motion was referred to the House Committees on NEMA, SEDC, NDDC, Ecological Fund Office, and Legislative Compliance for further action. This referral ensures that the necessary follow-up actions are taken to implement the resolutions passed by the House. The committees will play a crucial role in monitoring the progress of the relief efforts and ensuring that the affected communities receive the support they need.
