The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has directed the immediate demolition of a fire-ravaged one-storey building near Jackson Park traffic lights in Koforidua. This decision was made after assessing the structural integrity of the affected building and concerns over public safety. Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, gave the directive following an inspection of the site with security service commanders and Municipal Chief Executives of New Juaben North and South.

A fire broke out at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, severely damaging the building. The entire upper floor collapsed, and parts of the ground floor also gave way. Although the cause of the fire is yet to be established, the Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call at 11:02 p.m. and deployed a 10-member crew to the scene. Firefighters brought the fire under control at 1:23 a.m. on Sunday and completely extinguished it at 3:04 a.m.

The fire destroyed several businesses and residential units within the building, including the Kwaku Showboy Boutique and Mama Pee Collection. Items destroyed included personal care products, electrical cables, jewellery, paints, drinks, air conditioners, mobile phones and accessories, clothing, and footwear. The swift intervention of the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining properties.

The REGSEC directive aims to remove the immediate danger posed by the weakened structure and prevent further harm to residents, traders, and pedestrians in the busy Jackson Park area. The demolition is intended to ensure public safety and avoid potential risks associated with the damaged building.

The affected premises housed various businesses and residential units, highlighting the potential impact on local economic activities and residents. The directive for immediate demolition underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for prompt action to mitigate risks.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey emphasized the importance of prioritizing public safety in the face of such disasters. The collaboration between REGSEC, security service commanders, and local authorities demonstrates a concerted effort to address the aftermath of the fire and prevent further incidents.

The incident at Koforidua Jackson Park highlights the importance of fire safety measures and emergency preparedness. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future are being considered by local authorities.
