Regentropfen University College, located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, has announced plans to introduce a medical programme and build a hospital within the next five to ten years. This move is part of the institution's efforts to expand its academic offerings and improve access to professional education in Northern Ghana. The Founder and President, Rev. Fr. Dr Moses Asaah Awinongya, revealed this during the college's 10th anniversary celebration.
The proposed medical programme and hospital are part of Regentropfen University College's long-term development plans, which also include expanding postgraduate education, strengthening research, and securing a charter to operate as an autonomous university. The institution currently offers five diploma programmes, 10 undergraduate degree programmes, and three postgraduate programmes. Additional academic programmes have been submitted to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for accreditation.
Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya established Regentropfen University College to address the challenges faced by young people in rural communities in accessing higher education. He noted that before the institution's establishment, many students from the area had to travel to other parts of Ghana, particularly the south, to pursue higher education. The college aims to provide educational opportunities comparable to those available to students in major cities.
The institution has faced several challenges, including inadequate accommodation for staff and students, poor road access, limited infrastructure, and low enrolment during its early years. However, support from the University for Development Studies and other institutional partners has helped Regentropfen navigate these challenges. The college has made significant progress over the past decade.
Regentropfen University College initially received accreditation to offer 10 academic programmes, comprising five diploma and five bachelor's degree programmes. The institution has since expanded its offerings and is now seeking to broaden its academic programmes further. Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya emphasized the importance of accessible education and investing in postgraduate training, research, and partnerships.
The President reiterated the institution's ambition to secure a charter, which would enable it to operate as an autonomous university, subject to meeting the relevant regulatory requirements. He appealed to individuals, organisations, and development partners to support the institution's expansion plans, particularly projects aimed at improving infrastructure and increasing educational opportunities for students from underserved communities.
Regentropfen University College is celebrating its 10th anniversary under the theme, “From Vision to Reality: A Decade of Promoting Talents and Shaping Future Minds.” The institution's growth and development over the past decade reflect its commitment to providing quality education and promoting talent in the Upper East Region.
