The Federal Government has extended the maintenance closure of the Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, by one week. The Acting Federal Controller of Works, Anambra State Field Headquarters, Mr. Timothy Emenike, announced the extension due to the impact of heavy rainfall on the project. The maintenance work was initially set to be completed by September 21 but could not be finished on time.
According to Mr. Emenike, the contractor requires at least three consecutive dry days to return fully to the site and continue the work. The extension is subject to favourable weather conditions. Despite the challenges, he noted that significant work has been done on most portions of the bridge. However, some areas have been affected by the constant heavy rains and need dry conditions to proceed.
The Federal Government had announced the closure of the bridge from September 7 to 21 for emergency rehabilitation and maintenance works. The project includes replacement of vandalised railings, bolts and nuts, portions of the expansion-joint steelwork, and stanchion/steel truss nuts. Additionally, the installation of CCTV cameras and other general rehabilitation works are aimed at improving the safety and condition of the bridge.
During a visit to the bridge, it was observed that the facility remained barricaded with heavy construction equipment stationed on the bridge. Some workers were seen carrying out activities at the site despite the heavy rainfall. The persistent rainfall had affected some sections of the bridge where maintenance work had already been carried out.
Mr. Emenike also mentioned that lighting challenges affecting night operations have been addressed, and security concerns around the bridge have been resolved. The contractor is ready to resume work once the weather permits. The extension of the closure is intended to ensure that the maintenance work is completed to the required standards.
