The Uganda Prisons Service has made a significant contribution of over Shs550 million towards the completion of St. Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano, in Rukungiri District. This contribution was announced during a fundraising event that raised a total of Shs2.47 billion for the cathedral's completion. The event, which served as a thanksgiving service for Commissioner General of Prisons, Canon Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, was held on November 1, 2026, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

The fundraising event was organised by the North Kigezi Diocese Kampala Fellowship and brought together Christians, religious leaders, and well-wishers to mobilise resources for the cathedral's completion. Commissioner General Byabashaija, who is also the Head of Laity of North Kigezi Diocese, contributed Shs43 million towards the project alongside his family. The event was attended by prominent figures, including President Yoweri Museveni, who was represented by Second Deputy Prime Minister Crispus Kiyonga, and contributed Shs300 million towards the project.

The cathedral project was initiated in 2019 by the late Bishop Benon Magezi as part of efforts to establish a befitting worship centre for the diocese. Following his death in 2021, the project continued under Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe, who was consecrated in March 2023. The North Kigezi Diocese, established in 1981 after being carved out of the larger Kigezi Diocese, covers Rukungiri District in southwestern Uganda.

The Uganda Prisons Service's contribution reflects the officers' collective commitment to supporting the development of the Church. The service has been actively involved in various community development projects, and this contribution demonstrates their dedication to giving back to the community. Commissioner General Byabashaija's 69th birthday was also celebrated during the event, marking 43 years of public service and 35 years of marriage.

Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe led the thanksgiving service and appealed for continued support towards completing the cathedral. The cathedral's completion is expected to provide a modern worship centre for the North Kigezi Diocese, serving the spiritual needs of the community. The diocese has been without a befitting cathedral since its establishment.

Commissioner General Byabashaija has served as the head of the Uganda Prisons Service for 21 years. His contributions to the prison service and the Church have been recognised, and the event celebrated his achievements. The North Kigezi Diocese Kampala Fellowship's efforts to mobilise resources for the cathedral's completion have been commended.

The completion of St. Emmanuel Cathedral is a significant milestone for the North Kigezi Diocese. The project has brought together various stakeholders, including government officials, religious leaders, and community members, to support the development of the Church. The cathedral is expected to serve as a symbol of hope and spiritual growth for the community.
