A presumed thief was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in Bouré Finabala, a sector in the district of Bouré Nafadji, in the Siguiri region of Guinea. The arrest was made by a group of local youths conducting a night patrol in an area experiencing a surge in banditry. According to eyewitnesses, two individuals had stolen two motorbikes from Bouré Nafadji and were intercepted by the patrol.
The youths gave chase, and one of the suspects managed to escape, while the other was apprehended. During interrogation at the police station, the arrested suspect confessed to the crime and implicated his accomplice, Alpha Oumar Barry, who remains at large. The suspect claimed to have met Barry at a café-bar in Siguiri-Ville, where he was offered a chance to make quick money by stealing.
The suspect stated that this was his first time involved in such a crime and that he was motivated by financial difficulties, being a father of two wives and eight children. The stolen motorbikes, a red Haojue and a blue TVS Jive Gross, were recovered. The arrest has sparked relief among locals who have been complaining about a rise in thefts of valuable items.
Residents of Bouré Nafadji and neighboring areas have expressed frustration over the repeated incidents of theft and the perceived lack of effective judicial follow-up on previously arrested suspects. Local leaders have voiced concerns that despite their efforts to hand over suspects to the police, the suspects often end up being released back into the community.
The police commissioner of Bouré Nafadji acknowledged the numerous reports of theft received from the civilian population. At the time of reporting, procedures were underway to transfer the suspect to the sub-prefectural headquarters in Didi for further investigation. The owners of the stolen motorbikes have come forward, and one of the motorbikes has been returned to its owner.
The second motorbike, a Haojue, is pending verification of its ownership documents, which were temporarily absent. As a result, both the motorbike and the suspect are being transferred to the Didi center for further verification. Local residents are cautiously welcoming the arrest, hoping it signals a turn in the fight against banditry in the area.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by local communities in tackling crime with limited resources.
