President William Ruto has formally dedicated the final resting place of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County. The ceremony, held at the Kang'o ka Jaramogi homestead, marks a significant milestone in honoring Raila's legacy. The mausoleum, designed to reflect Raila's political career and family's story, sits beside the tomb of Raila's father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya's first vice president. Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80.

Notably, ODM leader Oburu Odinga was absent from the ceremony. His office had recently dismissed online claims that he had died, stating that he was alive and recuperating steadily. According to his secretariat, Oburu was advised by his doctors to take it easy and avoid strenuous activity. His son, Jaoko, represented the family at the event. Raila's widow, Mama Ida Odinga, and other relatives, senior Nyanza politicians, and invited guests attended the ceremony.

The President was accompanied by Siaya Governor James Orengo, Kisumu's Anyang' Nyong'o, and Homa Bay's Gladys Wanga. A ceremonial send-off was given by soldiers, and areas were set aside for members of the public to watch the event. Entry to the grounds was restricted to ensure a smooth ceremony. Raila Junior, Raila's son, conveyed an apology from Oburu Odinga for missing the event.

The mausoleum's design is a five-sided structure that draws inspiration from Raila's political career and family's story. The pentagon shape was deliberately chosen to contrast with Jaramogi's six-sided tomb, symbolizing a father-and-son pair. The design also nods to Raila's political career, specifically the "Pentagon," a team of allies he formed under ODM ahead of the 2007 General Election.

The construction of the mausoleum was a collaborative effort between Kenya Defence Forces engineers and technical staff from the museum sector. Once complete, it is expected to be managed by the National Museums of Kenya, which will preserve and interpret the memorial. The mausoleum will join a larger heritage site at the homestead that already has a museum on Jaramogi's life.

The event marks a significant milestone in honoring Raila Odinga's legacy and contributions to Kenya's struggle for change. Raila Odinga's dedication to public service spanned decades, including a stint as Prime Minister. His passing has left a void in Kenyan politics, and the unveiling of his mausoleum serves as a testament to his enduring impact.

The ceremony concluded with a message from Oburu Odinga, conveyed through his son Jaoko, expressing regret for missing the event. As the nation continues to mourn the loss of Raila Odinga, the unveiling of his mausoleum stands as a tribute to his life and legacy.
