President Ruto lays foundation for 340-bed Wumingu TVC hostel in Taita-Taveta

President William Ruto has initiated a Sh145 million project to construct a 340-bed hostel at Wumingu Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Taita-Taveta County. The project is part of the government's Affordable Housing Programme aimed at expanding student accommodation in universities and technical and medical training institutions. Ruto laid the foundation stone at Funju in Wundanyi on Saturday, September 26, after returning to Kenya from international engagements. Several senior government officials, including Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, welcomed the President to Taita-Taveta.

The Wumingu TVC hostel is part of a wider government plan to provide additional accommodation for students enrolled in higher and technical education institutions. The government is investing Sh2 billion in Taita-Taveta to construct hostels that will accommodate about 5,000 students from universities, technical colleges, and the Kenya Medical Training College. This investment aims to address students' accommodation needs while supporting the expansion of tertiary and technical education facilities.

The new hostels at Wumingu TVC will provide 340 beds for students at the institution, which is located about 10 kilometres north of Wundanyi town. The President stated that the government will also prioritize tarmacking the road from Wundanyi town to the college and ensure reliable access to water and electricity for the institution and the local community. These initiatives are expected to improve the overall learning environment and infrastructure in the area.
