Chairman of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Ernest Norgbey, has stated that it would be premature to call for the removal of Sports Minister Kofi Adams while investigations into alleged irregularities surrounding Ghana’s World Cup travel arrangements are ongoing. He made these comments on Joy FM’s Top Story. Norgbey emphasized that he would only support calls for the minister to step aside if the committee’s investigations establish that his continued stay in office could interfere with the process.
The allegations surround the arrangements for officials and other individuals who travelled for the 2026 World Cup. The Minority in Parliament has called for President John Mahama to remove Mr Adams from office, citing concerns over visa and travel arrangements. Specifically, they question why some individuals paid significantly more than the amounts contemplated in the original arrangements. However, Norgbey stressed that these allegations must first be established through investigations before conclusions are drawn.
Norgbey drew a distinction between the case of the National Sports Authority (NSA) boss, Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, who was asked to step aside after being invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to provide evidence. He noted that the President may have received a briefing from the CID that led to the NSA boss's stepping aside. Norgbey clarified that he is not aware that Mr Adams has been invited by the CID for questioning.
The Youth and Sports Committee is still awaiting additional information from the minister and various agencies involved in the preparations for the World Cup before it can conclude its own report. Norgbey maintained that it would be premature to demand the minister’s removal at this stage, stressing that the investigative process should be allowed to establish the facts. He urged that the process be allowed to unfold without interference.
Norgbey's comments follow a series of allegations and calls for action against the Sports Minister. The Minority has demanded the minister's dismissal and prosecution over the alleged irregularities. However, Norgbey's stance suggests a more cautious approach, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations.
The CID is conducting investigations into the alleged irregularities. Norgbey encouraged that the investigations be given the space to uncover the truth. He emphasized that conclusions should be based on established facts rather than speculation or political pressure.
The controversy surrounding the World Cup travel arrangements has sparked significant debate. Norgbey's position reflects a careful consideration of the parliamentary process and the need for evidence-based decision-making. The committee's final report will likely shed more light on the matter.
