A quiet suburb of Anloga in the Volta Region is in mourning after a mason and his pregnant wife were discovered dead in their room on October 7, 2026. The deceased have been identified as Daniel Agbenyegah, 35, and his wife Patience Awumee, believed to be between 29 and 30 years old and roughly seven months pregnant at the time of her death. Awumee had previously earned a living selling eggs.
According to Edwin Kwasi Vedzi, the Assembly Member for the Anloga Kportorgbe Electoral Area, preliminary information suggests Agbenyegah killed his wife with a knife before taking his own life. However, he stressed that this account has not been verified and that police confirmation is still awaited. Both bodies were found with slashed throats in their room.
The couple had travelled on the Sunday before the incident to visit Awumee's parents and returned to Kportorgboe on Monday at around 11:00am. The deaths are believed to have occurred roughly half an hour after the couple got back home. The couple lived in a house belonging to Agbenyegah's grandfather, alongside other relatives.
Vedzi told GNA that neighbours in the compound were not on speaking terms with the household and that nobody reported hearing any argument or disturbance before the bodies were discovered. He added that there was no known history of conflict between the couple that residents or neighbours were aware of, leaving the motive for the tragedy unclear.
Police later removed the bodies and deposited them at the Keta Municipal Hospital Morgue, where an autopsy is expected to help establish the exact cause of death and confirm or rule out the murder-suicide account currently circulating in the community. Vedzi described the Kportorgboe community as shaken by the news, with residents struggling to come to terms with the deaths of a young couple expecting a child.
The case has stirred renewed concern locally about domestic violence and the lack of visible warning signs in relationships, since neither family members nor neighbours reported any known tension between Agbenyegah and Awumee before the tragedy. For families and local assemblies across Ghana, the incident underscores how difficult it can be to detect domestic distress in households.
According to GNA, police are expected to release further details once investigations and the autopsy at Keta Municipal Hospital are completed. No timeline for the release of these findings has been given. The incident has left the community in shock, with residents appealing for calm and cooperation with police investigators.
