EThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba has expressed his gratitude to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) for investing in the revitalisation of Durban's passenger rail service. Xaba, along with Members of the Executive Committee (EXCO) and PRASA's top management, recently travelled by train from Durban Station to Umlazi to assess the condition of the corridor and the progress being made to modernise the signalling and telecommunications systems. This inspection was a significant step towards understanding the current state of the rail infrastructure and the efforts being made to improve it.
PRASA is currently undertaking a substantial R11 billion signalling and telecommunications programme across various corridors in South Africa. This project aims to significantly improve the safety, reliability, and scheduling of train services. As part of this programme, PRASA is also investing approximately R2 billion in the rehabilitation of the Umlazi Corridor, which carries the largest number of train passengers in the province. Both projects are at various stages of implementation, indicating a significant commitment to enhancing the rail network.
The signalling and telecommunications programme is expected to have a profound impact on the efficiency of train services in Durban. Upon completion, the project will enable trains to operate at intervals of between three and five minutes, supporting the growth of annual passenger numbers from the current 1.8 million to a projected 10 million. This substantial increase in capacity is crucial for meeting the growing demands of commuters in the region.
In anticipation of increased demand, PRASA has already procured 101 new trains to bolster its fleet. This strategic move is aimed at ensuring that the rail service can accommodate the projected surge in passenger numbers. Furthermore, next month, PRASA will officially unveil the first of seven sections where signalling has been completed, with the first section covering the corridor between Crossmoor and Havenside.
