The widespread availability of pornography has become a pressing concern in Rwanda, particularly among the youth. With the rise of technology and internet accessibility, young people are increasingly exposed to explicit content. According to Pornhub, a prominent online platform for adult content, over 100 million people visit the site daily, with many young users starting to explore such material as early as 12 years old.

A recent study by Common Sense Media found that 71% of teenagers and young adults reported watching pornography in the week leading up to the survey. The study revealed that participants first encountered pornography at an average age of 12, with 15% having seen it at 10 years old or younger. Furthermore, 45% of respondents reported that such content provided them with information about sexual relationships.

Experts warn that exposure to pornography can significantly influence young people's perceptions of love and relationships. The ease of access to various information through smartphones and the internet has made it easier for young people to stumble upon explicit content, often unintentionally. What begins as curiosity or accidental exposure can quickly become a habit, potentially leading to addiction and negatively impacting daily life and relationships.

Traditionally, young people would learn about love and relationships from their parents, peers, or educational institutions. However, with the proliferation of smartphones, young people can now access vast amounts of information, not all of which is reliable or educational. Pornography can present an unrealistic portrayal of relationships, particularly for young people who may struggle to distinguish between fantasy and reality.

For some young people, watching pornography can start as an occasional activity but eventually become a regular habit. As this habit forms, it can alter their self-perception and influence their relationships with others. In romantic relationships, this can lead to unrealistic expectations and conflicts, especially if one partner expects the relationship to mirror what they have seen online.

Another concern is that pornography can lead to body image issues among young people. Comparing themselves to the actors in adult films, some young individuals may feel pressure to conform to certain physical standards or behaviors. This can result in dissatisfaction with their own bodies or those of their partners, highlighting the need for open discussions about healthy relationships and body image.

Parents and guardians play a crucial role in addressing this issue by engaging in open and honest conversations with young people about the potential risks and consequences of pornography. By providing accurate information and helping young people develop critical thinking skills, they can mitigate the negative effects of exposure to explicit content and foster healthier attitudes towards relationships and self-image.
