The Kano State Police Command has arrested Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal for questioning over an alleged public display of an assault rifle during a political gathering in the state. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the alleged display of the firearm constitutes a violation of the Firearms Act. Warkal was taken to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano, following a viral video reportedly showing him openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle.
The police said its cyber patrol team detected the video while monitoring social media platforms as part of the Command's intelligence-led surveillance operations across the state. On the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters for questioning. The Command is examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged display, stressing that the act could incite fear, intimidate members of the public, and breach public peace and security.
CP Bakori warned that the Command would not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, regardless of the status of those involved. The Commissioner further directed political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act, and other relevant laws. Bakori emphasized that political engagements must promote peace, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law.
Warkal is currently at the Command's State Intelligence Department (SID), and investigations are in progress. The police have not disclosed any additional details about the incident or Warkal's current status. The viral video showing Warkal with the firearm sparked widespread concern and prompted the police to take swift action.
The incident has raised concerns about the proliferation of small arms and the need for politicians to adhere to the laws governing the use of firearms. The Kano State Police Command has been working to maintain peace and security in the state, particularly in the run-up to the elections. The Command's efforts to monitor social media platforms and respond to potential threats have been commended by residents.
The Firearms Act, which Warkal allegedly violated, regulates the possession and use of firearms in Nigeria. The Act prohibits the display of firearms in public, except in cases where it is authorized by law. The police have the power to arrest and prosecute anyone found to have contravened the Act.
The arrest of Warkal has sent a strong message to politicians and the public that the police will not tolerate any form of lawlessness or display of firearms. The incident has also highlighted the need for politicians to be mindful of their actions and to promote peace and tolerance during political engagements.
