Police in Kazo District have made a breakthrough in the investigation into an attack that left three people dead and two others seriously injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 25 at Kagasha 1 Cell, Nkungu Parish, Nkungu Sub-county, Kazo District. According to SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson, the deceased have been identified as 47-year-old Ntegyerize Afusa and two juveniles, 14-year-old Tumuramye Sudais and 11-year-old Nuwandinda Asifa.
Two other children, 16-year-old Nagasha Zulaika and 13-year-old Nuwahereza Aramazani, survived the attack with serious injuries and are receiving treatment at a health facility. The incident was discovered by Nuwahereza Abdul Ratifu, who went to his mother’s home early that morning to pick up his tricycle, commonly known as a tuk-tuk, before going to work. Ratifu found the house open and discovered his mother, brother and sister lying in pools of blood.
He also found the two injured children in another bedroom and immediately rushed them to a health facility before reporting the matter to police at about 8:00am. A case file was opened at Kazo Central Police Station under Kazo CRB 690/2026. Preliminary investigations indicate that the attackers may have been acting on information that Afusa had received about Shs1.5 million, which was reportedly kept in her room.
The suspects allegedly gained access to the house through a back door that had not been properly secured. They are suspected to have used a hammer, panga and walking stick during the assault, killing three people, injuring two others and taking the money. As part of the investigation, police deployed a sniffer dog at the scene, which picked up a scent and led detectives to Nuwamanya Christopher, who was arrested.
His arrest subsequently led to the apprehension of two alleged accomplices, Nuwamanya Micheal and Asiimwe Abel. Police have since searched the suspects’ residences and recovered several valuable items believed to be connected to the incident. The exhibits have been secured and will be submitted to forensic experts for further examination and analysis.
The three suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and the respective roles of those arrested. Inquiries are still ongoing to determine the motives behind the attack and the extent of the suspects' involvement. The police are working to gather more evidence and confirm the details of the case.
