The Ghana Police Service has conducted a successful operation at Achimota in Accra, resulting in the arrest of 64 suspects. The operation, carried out by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police (SOA) in collaboration with the National SWAT, aimed to address complaints from residents about suspected criminal activities. The suspects were arrested for alleged unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 and its surroundings.
According to the Police, the operation followed concerns about the open display and possible trading of firearms in the area. One of the suspects, Theophilus Ashon, allegedly impersonated a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). However, checks revealed that he was not a police officer. A search on Ashon led to the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Further investigations led Police to Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was arrested. A search of Mills' residence resulted in the recovery of three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition, and other exhibits. The Police stated that the suspects were in police custody assisting with investigations and would be put before the court.
The Police also identified a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle at the scene, with a pistol holster inside. The vehicle was impounded and taken to the Police Headquarters for further investigation after no person at the scene claimed ownership of the holster. The operation demonstrates the Police's commitment to addressing concerns about public safety and tackling illicit activities.
