Three alleged members of the Ugly Americans gang, Igshaan Abrahams, Paul Solomon, and Wade van Reenen, appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They are facing charges related to alleged crimes committed over two decades in the Western Cape. The charges include the murder of Cape Town father Malcolm Pather, who was burnt beyond recognition in Melkbosstrand during July 2025.
The trio had previously abandoned their bail application, while 18 of their co-accused have a parallel bail application at the same courthouse. The State informed the court that Van Reenen was considering a possible plea bargain. Senior State Prosecutor Advocate Alfred Isaacs said he was awaiting instructions from his deputy director regarding the plea proposal.
The men’s legal team objected to the postponement of their case, citing that their clients had been incarcerated for more than a year. Van Reenen’s lawyer argued that the matter had been on the roll before and his client had been in custody for a year and three months. The magistrate postponed the case to December 1, 2026, for a Western Cape High Court date.
According to the charge sheet, the State is set to prove under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) that the accused are members of the Ugly Americans gang. The gang is alleged to operate under strict hierarchies, mimicking those of prison gangs such as the “26” and “27”. The charge sheet states that the gang’s alleged criminal activities extended from October 2002 until December 2025.
The State alleges that the accused carried out a reign of terror over two decades, affecting communities in Mitchells Plain, Athlone and Table View. Two of the accused are clergymen who claim to have changed their lives. Abrahams, Zainoedeen Greef and Solomon are believed to be part of a group allegedly behind the murder of Pather.
Pather was allegedly lured by the group and was driving a BMW at the time. The State, armed with documentaries and witness testimony, has called for the accused to remain behind bars, citing the alleged criminal organisation of gangs in the Western Cape. The accused are part of a group of 21 alleged Ugly Americans gang members.
The case has been postponed to December 1, 2026, and the State is seeking to transfer the matter to the Western Cape High Court. The accused will remain in custody until then. The Ugly Americans gang is one of several gangs operating in the Western Cape, and the State is working to dismantle their alleged criminal networks.
