The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, have overseen the disbursement of N1.5 billion in humanitarian assistance to 1,579 victims of violent attacks in five local government areas of Plateau State. The intervention comprises N1 billion donated by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, through her Renewed Hope Initiative, and N500 million provided by the Plateau State Government.
The beneficiaries of the assistance are drawn from Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bassa Local Government Areas. Speaking at the disbursement ceremony, Yilwatda recalled his personal experience of displacement during the crisis in the state, saying he had lost friends, neighbors, and relations. He commended Senator Oluremi Tinubu for responding to the plight of victims of the attacks.
Yilwatda urged the beneficiaries to use the assistance judiciously to rebuild their livelihoods, saying they could invest it and build new lives. He encouraged them to see the intervention as an opportunity to rebuild their families and communities after the devastation caused by the attacks. The APC national chairman expressed optimism that the people of Plateau would overcome the challenges posed by the attacks.
Governor Mutfwang described the occasion as a day to acknowledge the suffering of families whose lives had been permanently altered by violence. He appreciated Senator Tinubu for the N1 billion donation and said the combined N1.5 billion intervention represented a demonstration of compassion and solidarity with affected communities.
Mutfwang stressed that the intervention could not replace lives lost or completely erase the trauma suffered by victims. He pledged to continue working towards creating the conditions necessary for internally displaced persons (IDPs) to safely return to their ancestral homes. The governor urged the beneficiaries and other stakeholders to approach the intervention with patience, honesty, and understanding.
The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Kachollom Pyam Gang, said the N1.5 billion intervention was meant to support families and communities affected by violent attacks in Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Mangu, and Riyom local government areas. She expressed appreciation to Senator Tinubu for the N1 billion intervention through the Renewed Hope Initiative and commended Governor Mutfwang for adding N500 million to the intervention.
