The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has expressed concern over comments made by football administrator Takyi Arhin about former Black Stars captain Andre “Dede” Ayew. In a radio interview, Arhin suggested that Ayew would be better off investing in businesses in his hometown of Paga, including goat farming, rather than pursuing a career in football administration. The PFAG described the remarks as unacceptable and disparaging.

Arhin argued that success in football leadership required strong relationships and administrative experience. However, the PFAG has criticized the comments, saying personal ridicule should not be confused with constructive criticism of football administration. The union expressed concern over the widely circulated interview, in which Ayew was addressed in what it considered a disrespectful manner.

The PFAG issued a statement on Monday, 12 October 2026, criticizing Arhin's comments. The statement said people are entitled to express their views on football and its administration, but there is a clear difference between constructive criticism and personal ridicule. Ayew has enjoyed a lengthy career with the Black Stars, representing Ghana at multiple FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Ayew also captained the Black Satellites team that won the 2009 Africa Under-20 Championship and FIFA Under-20 World Cup. The PFAG said his commitment and service to Ghanaian football deserved recognition and respect, regardless of whether he chose to pursue a future role in the sport’s administration. The association was particularly concerned about references to Ayew’s northern roots.

The PFAG warned that such comments risked reinforcing regional stereotypes and creating divisions within Ghanaian football. “Ghana football belongs to every Ghanaian irrespective of where they come from — North, South, East or West,” the statement said. The union also cautioned that disparaging language could discourage well-meaning individuals and corporate partners from contributing to the development of football in the country.

The PFAG reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity and legitimate voice of current and former Ghanaian footballers. The association insisted that Ayew should be assessed on his ideas, experience, competence and contribution to the game rather than his family background. “Disagree with the person’s ideas if you wish. Debate the issues. But respect the individual,” the statement added.

The association concluded by urging football stakeholders to promote unity and fair play, stressing that disagreements should lead to constructive debate rather than division. The PFAG maintained that football administration should be driven by ideas, competence, vision and service rather than personal attacks or regional stereotypes.
