Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, the party's national leader, recently took their political engagement to the riverine communities of Bayelsa State. They participated in a traditional boat regatta in Toru-Orua, Dickson's hometown, as part of the NDC's preparations for the 2027 general elections. The event attracted attention as it was a unique approach to the party's mobilisation activities.
The visit provided an opportunity for Obi to interact with residents and experience some aspects of the traditional culture of the Niger Delta. During the boat procession, some young boatmen offered Obi the last available life jacket, which Dickson insisted he should wear, making reference to the expectations of millions of Nigerians. The moment attracted attention during the cultural outing, particularly as the two politicians moved through the waterways with members of the community.
Following the regatta, Dickson hosted Obi and other guests at a community dinner, where he described the former Anambra State governor as a 'gift from heaven'. Obi also expressed his commitment to supporting the NDC's position ahead of the 2027 elections. The visit also extended to Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, where Obi commissioned the NDC secretariat and called for a new approach to leadership.
Obi's visit to Bayelsa is not the first time he has been involved in a public engagement that required travelling through waterways. On October 23, 2022, Obi visited victims of the devastating floods in Umueri community, Anambra State, where he undertook a boat ride to assess the extent of the destruction. He donated food items and medicines to support the victims and was accompanied by some party chieftains.
During his visit to Umueri, Obi was accompanied by the President-General of the community, Chief Johnny Chukwudi Metchie. Metchie thanked Obi for visiting the displaced residents and providing assistance at a difficult time. He also called on the Federal Government and international organisations to take more practical steps towards addressing the recurring flooding that affects communities across the country.
Obi's participation in the Bayelsa boat regatta and his previous visit to flood victims in Umueri demonstrate his commitment to engaging with communities and addressing their challenges. The NDC's approach to mobilisation, as seen in the boat regatta, is a unique aspect of their campaign strategy. The party's preparations for the 2027 general elections are underway, with Obi and Dickson leading the charge.
The event in Bayelsa State highlights the NDC's efforts to connect with voters in the region. Obi's message of purposeful governance to address poverty, insecurity, and other challenges affecting citizens resonated with the party members. The NDC's campaign strategy, which includes engaging with communities through cultural events and traditional gatherings, aims to build a strong connection with voters ahead of the 2027 elections.
