In a remarkable turnaround, Penny Streeter, a South African entrepreneur, has converted a golf course in West Sussex, England, into a top vineyard. Her vineyard, located on the site of a former golf course, has been rated by connoisseurs as one of the top 50 best vineyards in the world. Streeter, who also owns Benguela Cove Vineyards in the Western Cape, was recognized for her business acumen with an Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth in 2006.

Streeter's journey to success was not without its challenges. She had previously experienced failure, having lost everything and been forced to live in council housing with her three children. However, she bounced back to become entrepreneur of the year and hospitality queen a decade later. Her success can be attributed to her determination and refusal to accept failure. Streeter's various business ventures include creating an empire of 24-hour medical emergency facilities, restoring the largest forest and gardens in southern England, and establishing two five-star hotels.

The Vineyard Hotel, located near Horsham, was formerly a golf club designed by renowned architect Harry Colt. The original 18-hole waterfall course featured a towering landmark oak on the first tee, overlooking the rolling South Downs. When the Streeter family acquired the secondary course, they converted it into a vineyard, planting 73,000 vines. Their decision was based on the fact that Victorian plant collectors had successfully grown rhododendrons in the area, suggesting that it could also sustain exceptional vines.

The vineyard has produced high-quality white and sparkling rosé wines, exceeding expectations. Within a year of planting, the upper floors of the golf club were transformed into The Vineyard Hotel, featuring nine luxurious rooms. The hotel's restaurant, The Vineyard Kitchen, offers a range of dishes suitable for golfers and wine connoisseurs. Guests can also explore the wine-tasting rooms, which showcase the entire range of Leonardslee House bubbles.

Streeter's South African heritage and wine legacy have contributed to the vineyard's success. She has imported South African talent, including Johann Fourie, who serves as the wine-maker and cellarmaster for Benguela Cove and Leonardlee Wines at The Vineyard. Fourie has emphasized the importance of terroir and heritage in the production of the vineyard's wines. The vineyard's labels, designed by local artist Will Parr, feature swallows, symbolizing the resilience and determination required to survive the journey between England and South Africa.

The Vineyard Hotel offers a range of attractions beyond its wine and golf offerings. The hotel is steeped in art and history, with a sculpture of a woman, "Faith," by South African sculptor Anton Smit, standing at the hotel's entrance. The surrounding area is also rich in history, with a mediaeval market town and ancient trails. A Royal Airforce Halifax bomber crashed on the 16th fairway in 1945, and a memorial and propeller blade are on display in the clubhouse.

Streeter's transformation of the golf course into a vineyard has put West Sussex on the map as a recognized wine destination. The Vineyard Hotel is now a popular destination for those looking to linger longer and experience the area's natural beauty, art, and history. With its luxurious accommodations, exceptional wines, and stunning surroundings, The Vineyard Hotel is a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts and golfers alike.
