The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned a reported attack on its campaign team in Cross River State, Nigeria. According to the party, the attack occurred while its members were consulting with residents across the state. The PDP alleged that armed thugs vandalised vehicles, fired gunshots, and injured several supporters during the incident.

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, the PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, described the incident as an assault on democratic participation and the right of political parties to engage freely with voters. The party has called on security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

The PDP also made accusations against the Cross River State governor, alleging that the attack was sponsored by him, although no evidence was provided to substantiate this claim. The party warned that the governor would face the electorate’s verdict in the 2027 elections.

Rather than resorting to alleged intimidation of opposition figures, the PDP urged the governor to address concerns about his administration’s performance and account for its stewardship. The party criticised the governor’s record in office, claiming that his administration had yet to demonstrate sufficient evidence of major projects initiated and completed since assuming office.

The PDP further alleged that some projects presented as achievements by the governor's administration amounted largely to the repainting of existing structures. The party challenged the state government to provide a detailed account of how public funds had been spent.

According to the PDP, the financial resources accruing to Cross River State should translate into visible development, improved infrastructure, employment opportunities, and better living conditions for residents. The party maintained that public office was a responsibility entrusted to elected leaders by the people and should not be treated as a personal entitlement to be retained through intimidation or other unlawful means.

The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the people of Cross River State in their quest for accountable leadership and improved living conditions. The party urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding while participating in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections and called on security agencies to investigate the incident promptly and impartially.
