The Pleasant Hill Preaching Point has been inaugurated as the Pleasant Hill Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG). This development marks the transition of the small preaching point from 18 members to a fully recognised congregation with nearly 500 worshippers. The elevation comes with new responsibilities, including strengthening evangelism, attracting more souls, mobilising resources and completing the construction of a permanent chapel to accommodate the growing membership.
The Haatso District Minister, Rev. Lt. Col. Abraham Lord Armah Hammond, has urged members of the congregation to demonstrate their Christian faith through their daily lives and service to the community. He said the PCG’s church-planting activities had expanded beyond individual districts and presbyteries, with efforts extending to other parts of the country and outside Ghana, including South Africa. Church planting, he explained, was not simply about establishing places of worship, but also about nurturing Christians who would live out their faith and positively influence society.
Rev. Lt. Col. Armah Hammond stressed that Christians should not only profess their faith but also demonstrate it through their conduct. The transformation expected from Christianity, he said, should be evident in the lives of believers. According to him, members should become testimonies to others by reflecting the teachings of Christ in their everyday activities and making a positive impact on their communities.
The Minister in charge of the Pleasant Hill Congregation, Rev. Dr Martin Adu Obeng, said the inauguration had elevated the responsibilities of the church and required members to work harder to attract more souls and mobilise resources for its activities. He explained that the elevation meant that Pleasant Hill would now operate as a fully-fledged congregation with greater responsibilities, unlike its previous status as a preaching point.
Rev. Dr Adu Obeng disclosed that the congregation currently worshipped in a temporary facility but had begun efforts to construct a permanent chapel. He expressed the hope that the chapel would be completed within the next one to two years, allowing the congregation to move into its permanent place of worship. The church, he said, had experienced a decline in membership due to relocation, particularly following flooding, which forced some members to move outside the congregation’s jurisdiction.
Despite the challenge, Rev. Dr Adu Obeng said the church continued to evangelise and attract new members, particularly from surrounding communities and academic institutions. The Senior Presbyter of the church, Mr Kweku Oppong Amponsah, described the inauguration as an important milestone in the development of Pleasant Hill, which had grown significantly since its establishment as a preaching point.
Mr Oppong Amponsah said the congregation had grown from about 18 members to nearly 500 worshippers, attributing the growth to the commitment of members and leaders to the work of the church. He encouraged members to use the new status of the church as an opportunity to deepen their commitment to evangelism and support the development of the congregation.
