A recent TikTok post purportedly showing an Iranian strike on Gulf countries in October 2026 has been debunked by PesaCheck. The post, which includes Amharic audio and a caption reading "Breaking news. 5 October 2026," claims that Iran launched missile attacks on several Gulf countries hosting US military bases. However, PesaCheck's investigation reveals that the footage does not depict the alleged attack.

According to reports, Iranian missiles and drones have indeed struck Gulf infrastructure sites and US military bases since the US-Israel war against Iran commenced in February 2026. The conflict has led to significant tensions in the region. Nevertheless, a Google reverse image search on the video's keyframes confirms that the footage does not show the alleged Iranian strike.

Further investigation by PesaCheck found that the video was originally published by Le Progrès on 27 September 2026. The footage was part of a report about a fire that broke out at the Gaston Rébuffat facility in Craponne, France. Other reports about the fire in Craponne also contain images that match the keyframes in the TikTok clip.

The term "Gulf countries" can be geographically interpreted to include Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman. Politically, it may refer to the seven Arab Gulf states or the eight Arab League countries in the broader region. However, the term commonly refers to the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC): Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and Oman.

PesaCheck is part of an ongoing series of fact-checks examining content marked as potential misinformation on Facebook and other social media platforms. By partnering with Facebook and similar platforms, third-party fact-checking organisations like PesaCheck aim to help the public distinguish fact from fiction. The initiative seeks to provide deeper insight and context to posts seen in social media feeds.

The fact-check was written by a PesaCheck fact-checker based in Ethiopia and edited by senior copy editors Mary Mutisya and Cédrick Irakoze. The article was approved for publication by PesaCheck managing editor Doreen Wainainah. PesaCheck is East Africa's first public finance fact-checking initiative, co-founded by Catherine Gicheru and Justin Arenstein.

PesaCheck's primary goal is to help the public separate fact from fiction in public pronouncements about numbers that shape our world. The initiative focuses on pronouncements about public finances that shape government's delivery of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) public services, such as healthcare, rural development, and access to water/sanitation.
