Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has called on the Federal Government to publish the pricing formula used to determine the proposed 30-day fuel discount. Speaking at the APM North-East 2027 Town Hall Meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, Makinde questioned the government's approach to fuel price modulation. He insisted that Nigerians deserve transparency over how petroleum prices are determined.

The governor's demand comes after the Federal Government announced a 30-day fuel discount programme in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The initiative aims to ease the financial burden of rising petrol prices. However, the plan has attracted criticism from opposition figures who argue that it raises questions about the government's earlier decision to remove petrol subsidies.

Makinde criticised the assumption that government officials alone possess the knowledge required to address Nigeria's economic challenges. He argued that Nigerians have the capacity to dissect issues and proffer solutions. The governor urged the administration to make its calculations public, allowing economists, industry experts, and ordinary Nigerians to examine the figures and propose alternatives.

The Federal Government's 30-day fuel discount programme has been characterised as a possible return to fuel subsidies through an alternative arrangement. Critics have questioned the timing of the initiative ahead of the 2027 general elections. President Bola Tinubu removed the longstanding petrol subsidy shortly after assuming office in May 2023, a decision that significantly increased transport and living costs.

The administration has maintained that its economic reforms are intended to strengthen public finances and improve long-term economic stability. However, petrol prices have remained a major concern for households and businesses. Pump prices have reportedly reached about ₦1,400 per litre amid international energy market pressures.

Makinde's demand places renewed attention on the transparency of the government's fuel pricing mechanism. The governor's call for transparency is seen as a move to hold the government accountable for its economic decisions. The APM presidential candidate argued that Nigerians are not dumb and can provide better solutions if given the opportunity to examine the pricing template.

The issue has sparked a renewed debate about the government's approach to fuel pricing and subsidy removal. As Nigerians continue to grapple with the challenges of high petrol prices, the government's response to Makinde's demand is eagerly anticipated. The development has significant implications for the country's economic policy and the 2027 general elections.
