In a recent operation, the Burkinabe authorities cracked down on unregistered vehicles in Koudougou, seizing 834 vehicles without license plates. The operation, conducted on November 3, 2026, was a collaborative effort between the General Directorate of Land and Maritime Transport (DGTTM), the Regional Directorate of Urban Mobility, and law enforcement agencies. The goal was to enforce regulations and raise awareness among stakeholders.
A total of 1,615 vehicles were inspected during the operation, including 1,361 two-wheelers, 166 three-wheelers, and 88 four-wheelers. The DGTTM reported that over half of the vehicles checked lacked registration. As a result, 38 vehicles were impounded, and 212 others were sanctioned. The operation not only targeted vehicle owners but also visited motorcycle and cycle vendors to verify their permits and documentation.
Anicha Banka Kadiogo, Director of Maritime, River, and Transit Facilitation at the DGTTM, emphasized that the operation aimed to ensure compliance with regulations and encourage users to take responsibility. She stressed that vehicle owners must obtain either a provisional registration, valid for two months, or a definitive registration. Kadiogo also highlighted the crucial role of cycle vendors in the registration process, stating that provisional registrations should be issued at the point of sale.
The DGTTM's efforts to regulate vehicle registration are driven by security concerns and the need for reliable data on the country's vehicle fleet. In a context of growing insecurity, identifying vehicles and their owners is crucial. The operation also aimed to engage vendors and remind them that registration is not optional but mandatory.
The crackdown on unregistered vehicles is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and security in Burkina Faso. By working with various stakeholders, the DGTTM seeks to promote a culture of compliance and responsibility among vehicle owners and vendors. The authorities hope that such operations will become a regular occurrence to maintain order and ensure public safety.
According to the DGTTM, some vendors have already complied with regulations, while others still need to rectify their situations. The directorate has encouraged non-compliant vendors to regularize their status and warned that future operations will continue to enforce regulations. The goal is to create a safer and more secure environment for road users.
The Koudougou operation demonstrates the Burkinabe authorities' commitment to enforcing regulations and improving road safety. With over 800 unregistered vehicles seized, the operation sends a strong message to vehicle owners and vendors about the importance of compliance. The DGTTM will likely continue to conduct such operations to ensure that regulations are respected and that the country's roads become safer.
