The Casablanca-Settat region has seen a significant expansion of its pioneer school system for the 2026-2027 academic year. According to Mohamed Dib, director of the Regional Academy of Education and Training (AREF), over 600,000 students are enrolled in 1,171 pioneer schools. This development is part of the region's efforts to improve education and reduce school dropout rates. The pioneer school model aims to enhance fundamental learning and provide a better educational experience.
The deployment of the pioneer school model now covers 964 primary schools, with an estimated coverage rate of 80%, and 211 middle schools, including 90 newly integrated into the system. This expansion is a key aspect of the region's education strategy, which seeks to achieve specific objectives outlined in the 2022-2026 roadmap. By improving educational outcomes, the region aims to reduce dropout rates, particularly in the secondary school cycle.
The AREF has also focused on increasing the availability of educational institutions in the region. A total of 100 new schools have been established, with over 51 already operational. This brings the total number of schools in the region to 1,991, covering all three educational cycles. The creation of new schools aims to reduce class overcrowding and combat school dropout rates.
In addition to expanding educational infrastructure, the AREF has prioritized preschool education. Over 204,000 children aged 4 to 5 have been enrolled in preschool programs across the 16 provincial directorates under the AREF. The region has added 375 new preschool classrooms, increasing the enrollment rate to over 80%. The goal is to achieve universal preschool education by the 2028-2029 academic year.
The AREF has also emphasized social support for students. Three new boarding schools have been established, bringing the total to 88, which provide accommodation for over 15,000 students. Furthermore, approximately 17,000 students benefit from school meal services provided in 31 canteens. These initiatives aim to support students' well-being and encourage regular attendance.
The total number of students enrolled in the Casablanca-Settat region for the 2026-2027 academic year is 1,641,759. This includes 1,192,274 students in public schools and 449,485 students in private schools. The public education sector has seen an increase of 29,325 students, or 2.52%, compared to the previous academic year.
The expansion of pioneer schools and educational infrastructure in the Casablanca-Settat region reflects ongoing efforts to enhance education quality and accessibility. With a focus on improving learning outcomes, reducing dropout rates, and providing social support, the region aims to create a more inclusive and effective education system.
