The 18th edition of the Ouagadougou International Handicraft Fair (SIAO) officially opened on October 30, 2026, in Burkina Faso. The event was presided over by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Faso, in the presence of government members, military and customary authorities, and diplomatic corps representatives. The President's speech was delivered by Serge Gnaniodem Poda, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts.
This edition of SIAO is themed "African Handicrafts and Industrialization: What Synergy for Better Organization and Valorization of Local Products and Cultural Heritage?" The event aims to strengthen the contribution of handicrafts to the continent's industrial development. The President's message emphasized that handicrafts should no longer be seen as a simple subsistence activity or folkloric expression but as a pillar of Africa's industrial future.
The event is a continuation of the SIAO's history, initiated in November 1984 under President Thomas Sankara's leadership through the "Artisanat 84" exhibition, before its official structuring in 1988. In Burkina Faso, this ambition is reflected in the creation of the National Center for Artisanal Cotton Transformation, the promotion of Faso Dan Fani and Koko Dunda, and the development of the Texforce BF industrial complex.
The President's message also highlighted the link between political sovereignty and economic sovereignty, emphasizing that the former cannot be consolidated without the latter. Ghana is the guest country of honor, and its Minister of Trade, Agrobusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, transmitted fraternal greetings from President John Dramani Mahama, stressing historical and cultural ties between regional peoples.
The Minister of Trade, Agrobusiness, and Industry of Ghana called for strengthened commercial exchanges and the establishment of regional value chains. Tuesday, November 3, 2026, will be dedicated to the valorization of Ghanaian handicrafts and culture. Mali and Niger, members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Confederation, are also participating as special guests.
Following the official ceremony, Captain Ibrahim Traoré cut the inaugural ribbon and visited the exhibition pavilions. The SIAO will host exhibitors from over 30 countries until November 8, 2026. The program includes sales exhibitions, B2B meetings, a creativity contest, and spaces dedicated to African gastronomy.
This 18th edition aims to promote African handicraft know-how, valorize local products, and strengthen economic exchanges between participating countries. The event will provide a platform for artisans, businesses, and governments to network, share ideas, and explore opportunities for collaboration and growth.
