The Deputy German Ambassador to Ghana, Sarah Pfaffernoschke, has announced that more than 100 Ghanaian teachers studying the German language are expected to graduate from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) next year. This milestone marks the first cohort of its kind, representing a significant step forward in German language education in Ghana. The announcement was made during the German Language Day celebration at the German International School Accra (GISA) on October 31, 2026.

According to Ms Pfaffernoschke, every new German teacher brings the language to more students, opens up new opportunities, and helps build lasting connections between Germany and Ghana. The German language education initiative aims to give more young Ghanaians access to German language education, fostering stronger ties between the two countries. This effort is a collaborative one, with Ghanaian partners working alongside Germany to establish a network for the German language across Ghana.

The network for German language education in Ghana spans from the Goethe-Institut in Accra to the German language centers in Kumasi and UEW. This infrastructure supports the growth of German language education, enabling more Ghanaians to learn the language and potentially access opportunities in Germany. Ms Pfaffernoschke emphasized that learning German can open doors to new friendships, cultural experiences, and possibilities for study, vocational training, or work in Germany.

Germany offers a range of opportunities for qualified professionals, particularly in fields such as healthcare, engineering, skilled trades, technology, and research. The Deputy German Ambassador encouraged students to learn the German language, highlighting its importance in feeling at home in a foreign country, understanding its people, and becoming part of a community. By learning German, Ghanaians can broaden their horizons and tap into the opportunities available in Germany.

To further enhance German language education, GISA and UEW have signed a cooperation agreement. This agreement facilitates closer collaboration between the school and the university, with UEW students set to make planned classroom observation visits to GISA to observe how German is taught. This partnership aims to improve the quality of German language education in Ghana, ensuring that students receive the best possible training.

The German Language Day celebration at GISA provided a platform for Ms Pfaffernoschke to engage with students and emphasize the importance of language learning. She encouraged students to seize the opportunities available to them, highlighting the potential for personal and professional growth through language acquisition. The event also underscored the commitment of Germany and Ghana to strengthening their ties through education and cultural exchange.

The graduation of over 100 Ghanaian German teachers from UEW next year marks a significant milestone in the development of German language education in Ghana. This achievement demonstrates the progress made in the country's efforts to promote German language learning and cultural exchange with Germany. As the first cohort of its kind, these teachers will play a crucial role in spreading the German language to future generations of Ghanaians.
