Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has announced a N1 billion Teachers’ Appreciation Fund to mark the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration, not 2026 as possibly anticipated. The event, themed “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” took place in Umuahia, the state capital. This fund aims to appreciate the efforts of teachers in the state.

During the event, Governor Otti directed the commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education to reinstate any teacher below 65 years who had been disengaged due to attainment of 60 years. He emphasized that those below 65 should be returned to their positions, even if it is six months before retirement. This move is expected to alleviate concerns of teachers who were disengaged.

Governor Otti also addressed the issue of salary arrears, directing that all teachers whose salaries were delayed due to verification issues must be paid by the end of the month. Additionally, he ordered the immediate payment of salaries owed to the 4,075 newly recruited teachers who had not yet been paid. These directives aim to address financial concerns of teachers in the state.

The governor congratulated students from Abia State who excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. He expressed pride in their achievements and promised that more results would be seen as time goes on. This suggests a focus on academic excellence in the state.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, welcomed the gathering, noting that the theme underscores the important role teachers play in shaping society’s future. He highlighted that under Otti’s administration, the state’s education sector has undergone significant reforms, including staff recruitment, professional development, and improved school infrastructure.

Madu Chukwujekwu, chairman of the state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, commended Governor Otti for the recruitment of over 9,000 teachers, among other achievements. He drew Otti’s attention to challenges facing teachers but expressed confidence in his ability to address them, assuring him of the members’ continued support.

The event showcased the state government's commitment to improving the education sector and recognizing the efforts of teachers. With these initiatives, the government aims to enhance the learning environment and motivate teachers to continue providing quality education. The directives and announcements made during the event are expected to have a positive impact on the education sector in Abia State.
