The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State Council, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve the continued withholding of statutory allocations due to local government councils in the state. The Congress warned that failure to resolve the matter within the stipulated period would trigger a three-day sympathy strike in solidarity with affected local government workers. This warning was contained in a communiqué signed by the state NLC Chairman, Christopher Arapasopo.
The prolonged funding crisis has weakened the financial capacity of local government councils to discharge their constitutional responsibilities and meet their obligations to workers. Although Governor Ademola Adeleke intervened by paying local government workers their net salaries without deductions, the NLC maintained that this intervention could not substitute for the regular release of statutory allocations due to the councils. The Congress expressed concern about the impact of the funding crisis on local government workers.
The proposed three-day sympathy strike would commence at midnight on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and end at midnight on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. The strike is in line with the directives of the State Executive Council (SEC) and applicable labour laws. Additionally, peaceful picketing of United Bank for Africa (UBA) branches across Osun would begin on Thursday, November 12, as part of efforts to demand an end to the continued withholding and disputed disbursement of local government allocations.
The NLC stressed that the planned industrial action was not intended to antagonise residents of the state but was a legitimate response to the hardship faced by local government workers. The Congress argued that harmonious industrial relations could not be sustained in an atmosphere where workers’ welfare was undermined and legitimate entitlements remained uncertain. It urged the Federal and Osun State governments to act urgently and responsibly to resolve the crisis within the seven-day ultimatum.
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and South-West councils are supporting the mobilisation efforts to ensure the participation of workers and other stakeholders in the planned picketing. The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to workers’ rights and industrial peace. It also appealed to stakeholders to support a transparent and lasting resolution that would restore normalcy to the local government system and ease the hardship faced by affected workers.
