The Osun State Amotekun Corps has arrested more than 30 persons for allegedly violating the state’s environmental sanitation regulations. The arrests were made on October 6, 2026, in a midnight raid across Osogbo and its environs. Operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with environmental sanitation authorities, commenced enforcement against individuals engaging in indiscriminate disposal of refuse. This operation aims to tackle the persistent challenge of indiscriminate waste disposal in the state.

The enforcement followed the recent constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force by the Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke. The state government had warned residents against dumping refuse indiscriminately, particularly on roads and in drainage channels. Residents were directed to comply with established waste disposal arrangements to prevent environmental hazards. The Osun Amotekun Corps was mandated to work with environmental sanitation officials to identify and apprehend violators.

The arrested offenders were handed over to environmental sanitation officers for further investigation and appropriate action in line with the relevant environmental laws and regulations of the state. The Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, emphasized that the enforcement was necessary to curb the persistent practice of dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels. He highlighted the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly during the rainy season.

According to Omoyele, indiscriminate waste disposal becomes particularly dangerous during the rainy season, as refuse dumped in drainage channels can obstruct water flow, damage roads and create unhealthy conditions for residents. The Corps Commander urged residents across Osun State to cooperate with the government and desist from dumping refuse on roads, streets and drainage channels. He encouraged members of the public to make use of the waste collection arrangements provided by the state government.

Omoyele explained that the operation was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding residents but to ensure compliance with the state government’s environmental sanitation directives and protect communities from the consequences of improper waste disposal. Refuse trucks have been assigned to collect household waste from residents. The Corps Commander appealed to residents to properly package their waste and hand it over to designated waste collectors rather than disposing of it in unauthorised locations.

The Osun State Government has been taking measures to address the issue of indiscriminate waste disposal. The government established an Environmental Sanitation Task Force to oversee the enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations. The task force is working with the Osun Amotekun Corps to identify and apprehend violators. The government has also provided waste collection arrangements to make it easier for residents to dispose of their waste properly.

The enforcement operation is part of the state government's efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment. The government is working to prevent environmental hazards and promote a culture of proper waste disposal among residents. The arrest of over 30 persons for violating environmental sanitation regulations serves as a warning to others who engage in indiscriminate waste disposal.
