In a ceremony presided over by Mohamed Ag Albachar, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Communication, Digital Economy, and Administrative Modernization, the Office of Radio and Television of Mali (ORTM) has initiated a tree-planting campaign. The event saw the participation of ORTM staff and marked the beginning of a drive to plant 1,000 trees. This initiative aligns with the national reforestation campaign launched in July and aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of ORTM's new headquarters.
The tree-planting exercise was led by Mohamed Albachar and Yaya Konaté, who set an example by planting a tree. According to Albachar, planting trees is just the first step; their maintenance and monitoring are crucial for their survival. He emphasized that these efforts contribute to the national fight against desertification, environmental protection, and improving the quality of life for future generations.
The campaign follows the creation of a communication and digital bosquet by the Minister of Communication, Digital Economy, and Administrative Modernization, at the Société malienne de transmission et de diffusion (SMTD). The minister had encouraged services under his department to undertake concrete actions to restore vegetation. Colonel Amadou Ableye Koïta, head of the Water and Soil Conservation Division, commended the initiative and noted that reforestation efforts can occur throughout the year with proper technical support.
The ORTM tree-planting initiative is seen as a significant step towards environmental preservation, especially in the context of desertification, land degradation, and climate change impacts. The Colonel emphasized the importance of such initiatives and assured that his department is available to provide technical support to similar projects. He encouraged other organizations to undertake similar initiatives to promote environmental sustainability.
The ORTM management has assured that the planted trees will be regularly monitored to ensure their growth and development. This commitment was welcomed by the audience, who were encouraged to continue supporting environmental protection initiatives. The event demonstrates ORTM's dedication to contributing to Mali's environmental goals and promoting a culture of sustainability.
The national reforestation campaign, launched in July, aims to increase Mali's vegetation cover and mitigate the effects of desertification and climate change. The ORTM initiative is part of a broader effort to engage various sectors in environmental conservation. By involving different stakeholders, the government hopes to achieve significant results in restoring Mali's degraded lands and promoting sustainable development.
The ORTM tree-planting campaign is a notable example of a public institution taking proactive steps towards environmental sustainability. With 1,000 trees to be planted, the initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and serve as a model for other organizations to follow. The success of this project will depend on the continued commitment of ORTM and other stakeholders to environmental conservation.
