The Ilula Orphan Programme (IOP) in Tanzania is providing support to girls and young mothers who became pregnant at an early age. According to IOP Managing Director Edson Msigwa, the organisation established a special programme to help these young mothers rebuild their lives and become self-reliant. The programme currently supports six young mothers in a residential facility, while others receive support while living with their families.

The programme provides various forms of training and psychological support to help beneficiaries cope with challenges and build their capacity. Msigwa said the programme serves girls and young mothers, including those as young as 14, 17 and 18, who face circumstances that could threaten their future prospects. The beneficiaries receive support during the first year of the programme, which helps them regain confidence and acquire skills.

Beyond the programme for young mothers, IOP implements various social and economic projects in Iringa Region and Kilolo District. These projects aim to improve the lives of children, young people, women and older people. The organisation operates a children’s centre serving 45 boys and girls and runs an education sponsorship programme supporting children from pre-primary to secondary school.

A total of 616 children benefit from the education support programme at different levels, giving them opportunities to access education and better learning environments. The organisation also provides lunch and supports access to agricultural inputs in six primary schools in Kilolo District. This support helps address challenges facing children, particularly those travelling long distances to school.

Providing lunch is intended to support school attendance and improve learning among the children. Msigwa said the programme also focuses on building community capacity and ensuring that essential services can continue even when donor funding declines. The organisation implements initiatives designed to enhance the sustainability of services provided to beneficiaries.

IOP’s projects are being implemented alongside income-generating activities aimed at strengthening community capacity. These activities enhance the sustainability of services provided to beneficiaries. The organisation’s efforts aim to improve the lives of children, young people, women and older people in Iringa Region and Kilolo District.

The Ilula Orphan Programme demonstrates a commitment to supporting vulnerable groups in Tanzania. By providing training, psychological support and education, the organisation helps young mothers and children rebuild their lives and pursue their goals. The programme’s focus on sustainability and community capacity building ensures that its impact will be long-lasting.
