OPay, a digital financial services company, has marked eight years of operations in Nigeria, expanding its services beyond payments and money transfers. The company, which began operations in 2018, aims to make financial transactions more accessible to individuals and businesses. Over the past eight years, OPay has evolved from digital payments and transfers to a broader platform offering services including merchant payments, cards, savings, airtime and data purchases, and bill payments.
OPay's expansion has been shaped by the changing needs of Nigerian consumers, who increasingly rely on digital platforms for everyday financial transactions. The company's Nigerian operations were established following its acquisition of Paycom, a Central Bank of Nigeria-licensed Mobile Money Operator. OPay has subsequently expanded its regulatory and service capabilities, holding a National MFB licence. This expansion reflects the company's efforts to provide Nigerians with alternative and convenient channels for managing their finances.
For some of its customers, OPay's growth has been reflected in the way its services have become integrated into everyday life. Mrs. Saliu Oluwabukola, a customer, said her experience with OPay began in 2019 after she downloaded the application. She has used the platform for various transactions, including airtime and data purchases and electricity bill payments. Oluwabukola trusts OPay with any amount, citing the speed and convenience of its services.
Another customer, Dahiru Haruna from Ojo, Lagos, said his first encounter with OPay was through ORide in 2020. He used the service during a trip to Lagos and made payment through OPay. Haruna's experience demonstrated the growing role of technology in facilitating everyday transactions. He was impressed by the convenience of OPay's services and has continued to use the platform.
Latifat Ajoke Muftau, a customer, said her encounter with OPay came at a moment of financial difficulty after an ATM transaction left her debited without dispensing cash. A neighbour introduced her to OPay, enabling her to download the application and register with her phone number. Muftau received the money through the platform, citing the ease and speed of the transaction.
Beyond individual users, OPay has expanded its focus to businesses and merchants, providing digital payment infrastructure to facilitate transactions. The company has continued to invest in technology, customer support, and security as more Nigerians embrace digital financial services. OPay's expansion comes at a time when digital payments and financial technology have become increasingly important to Nigeria's economic activities.
OPay is also seeking to complement its commercial activities with investments in social development. The company has committed ₦1.2 billion over 10 years to a scholarship programme designed to support young Nigerians in accessing education. Its other social investment initiatives have focused on youth development, women's empowerment, skills development, and community support. The company's eight-year milestone marks its transition from being primarily associated with digital payments to becoming a broader financial services platform.
