Residents of Idogun Community in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria, have called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to extend development projects to their community. The community, which has been peaceful for the last 12 months, lacks infrastructural development, according to residents who organized a get-together to celebrate their one-year anniversary of peaceful co-existence. The community's residents believe that development is necessary to complement the peace they have enjoyed.
A crisis erupted in the town in October, during the annual New Yam festival, when some irate youths attacked the town's monarch, Oba Moses Bakare, and his wife. The traditional ruler left the town following the crisis, and the community leaders have been managing the affairs of Idogun. The leaders have called on the government to allow the appointment of a regent to fill the vacuum in the obaship of the town. This crisis highlighted the need for development and stability in the community.
Chief Roland Obasan, a traditional chief of the community, spoke during the celebration, emphasizing the community's need for intervention from the state government in areas such as education, farmers' empowerment, and political appointments for indigenes into the state government service. The community wants more of its children to be incorporated into the administrative side of the state, and progress in education, which has seen a dwindling population of pupils in some primary schools.
The community also requires empowerment in farming, with residents seeking government support in providing farm tools to improve their agrarian town. Chief Obasan mentioned that the community holds meetings at least twice a month to discuss improvements to the town and has maintained peace and tranquility within the town. The residents believe that government support will help them sustain this peace.
Another community leader, Mr Juliet Abosede, also known as Yeye Meto, explained that the program was to celebrate the peace and tranquility the community has enjoyed for one year after the monarch left. The community has learned from its mistakes and is maintaining peace through collective effort, holding quarterly meetings and attending meetings with elders to address any issues that may arise.
The community is appealing to the government, especially Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to provide infrastructural developments and a special institution to sustain development in the community. The residents believe that these developments will help them move forward and improve their quality of life. The community's leaders are hopeful that the government will respond to their appeals.
The Idogun Community's appeal to Governor Aiyedatiwa highlights the need for development in rural areas of Ondo State. The community's residents are eager to work with the government to improve their town and enjoy the benefits of development. The government's response to this appeal remains to be seen.
